The project:

In the week following up to November 2nd, the streets and markets of Mexico are buzzing with excitement; everything must be ready so that when the spirits enter through the doors of one’s home they will be presented with a  flood of multi-colored offerings.

Food is prepared for everyone, living and dead, in large pots with the finest examples of Mexican cuisine. The dead are presented with food, drink, flowers, and baskets with offerings and altars  It is the Day of the Dead, a celebration of life.

Colombian photographer Consuelo Bautista visited different parts of Mexico for 7 years during the festivities with the intention of capturing the spirit, magic, humor and excitement of the celebration.

Pazcuaro,Tzin-tzun-tzan, Santa Fé de la Laguna, Jantzio en Michoacán; Huautla en Hidalgo; Campeche; Ocatepec en Morelos; Oaxaca; Puebla y Ciudad de México, among others, celebrate the Day of the Dead.

• In Campeche, they redecorate and meticulously clean the tombs with a brush
• In Michoacan, they sleep in the cemeteries through the night of November 1, while lighting candles after sharing food and drink with loved ones
• In Morelos, the garments belonging to the deceased are placed on the altars to imitate their presence
• In Hidalgo, ritualistic dances involving masks made of cloth or wood are accompanied by local music bands
• In Mexico City, in the dangerous neighborhood of Tepito, it is a night of peace and the Saint of Death is worshipped

El proyecto:

En gran parte de México una semana antes del 2 de Noviembre, las calles y los mercados rebosan; hay que tener todo a punto para que las puertas de las casas se abran decoradas con ofrendas multicolores.

Prepararan comida para todos, vivos y muertos, en grandes calderos con lo mejor de la cocina mexicana. Comida, bebida, flores, cestos con ofrendas y altares para ellos. Es el día de los muertos, una fiesta para vivir.

Atraída por esta celebración, la fotógrafa  Consuelo Bautista recorrió  por estas fechas, durante 7 años, diferentes lugares de México, con la intención de captar el espíritu, la magia, el humor, el sentido onírico y la emoción de la fiesta.

Pazcuaro,Tzin-tzun-tzan, Santa Fé de la Laguna, Jantzio en Michoacán; Huautla en Hidalgo; Campeche; Ocatepec en Morelos; Oaxaca; Puebla y Ciudad de México, entre otros, se vuelcan para festejar el regreso:

• En Campeche,  redecoran y limpian cuidadosamente con pinceles los osarios
• En Michoacán duermen en el cementerio durante toda la noche del día 1 de Noviembre, velando a los suyos después de haber compartido comida y bebida
• En Morelos el vestuario de los familiares es colocado en los altares imitando su presencia
• En Hidalgo, bailes con mascaras de tela o madera, son acompañados por bandas de música autóctona
• En Ciudad de México, en el peligroso barrio de Tepito, es una noche de tregua:  se adora a la Santa Muerte
